Conference Panel: Money! Sex! Politics! Negotiating Gender Bias to Get What You Want as a Writer and as an Academic
Featuring Marcela Sulak, Cate Marvin, Hoa Nguyen, Cynthia Roth, and Danielle Pafunda. This panel will focus on common sense ways to avoid pitfalls of gender bias as a writer and in academia, and to implement effective tactics for sensitizing our colleagues to gender-based patterns that harm us all. Panelists will discuss how they draw on resources from the fields of systems dynamics, business management, and diplomacy women to help identify gender bias and eliminate it. Friday, April 10: 2 Events! 7:00pm Reading: An Ugly Duckling Presse, Conduit, and Fence Poetry ShindigConduit, Fence, and Ugly Duckling Presse have joined forces to present a night of poetry and music. Corina Copp, Ben Fama, Dobby Gibson, Jennifer Mackenzie, Hoa Nguyen, James Shea, and Dara Wier will read from their work and Dreamland Faces will provide the musical interludes. After such exultations, Fred Schmalz will spin the best in soul and funk for your listening and dancing pleasure. For those who like to eat, yes, a food truck will be on site.

Literary Tribute to Grant Hart and seminal band Hüsker Dü Tribute to Minneapolis-based songwriter Grant Hart and seminal band Hüsker Dü. Writers include John Beer, James Brubaker, Paula Cisewski, Maria Damon, Matthew Derby, Michael Fournier, Tim Horvath, Laurie Lindeen, Daniel Mahoney, Hoa Nguyen, Constance Squires, Justin Taylor, Joel Turnipseed, and maybe a surprise guest or two. Then a short conversation with Grant Hart about his most recent album, The Argument — a critically acclaimed concept album based on William S. Burroughs’s treatment of John Milton’s Paradise Lost — and the influence of literature on his music. Tarot Marathon at the Book Fair: poet Hoa Nguyen will offer individual, 10-minute tarot readings at the Wave Books table (926/928) and interpret cards regarding the past, present and future. All that is required is a focused question and the purchase of two Wave books.
