Writing Workshop Forming: 6 Sundays from June 5 to July 10

Austin and VirtualMeeting time: 4 PM to 6 PM

We will be studying Ted Berrigan’s The Sonnets; this book of poems will generate talk and strategies for the writing we enact in class. We will spend the first hour listening to the poems aloud and the second hour writing. The writing portion will take the form of starting points & prompts drawn from the poems and those of my own design. Our writing sessions will be formalized into poems—participants will gather works into mini-manuscripts for review and commentary in the final class.Required Text:*The Sonnets* by Ted Berrigan, Penguin BooksRecommended Texts:*The Selected Poems of Ted Berrigan*, University of CA Press*The Collected Poems of Ted Berrigan*, University of CA Press*Talking In Tranquility: Interviews with Ted Berrigan* Avenue B, O Books

Students are responsible for purchasing required text and for bringing it, a writing notebook and pen to class.

About the Workshop: I have been leading this poetry workshop for 13 years. The focus for the workshop is transmission and absorption and doing. We spend half the class reading the selected text aloud and the second half writing. Previous workshops have engaged the works of Dickinson, Stein, Niedecker, Kyger, and Whalen as well as Olson’s Maximus. An essay on the class is included in the anthology "Poets on Teaching" (University of Iowa, 2010). The workshop takes place in my home in 78704.Cost for this class is $66. No one turned away for lack of funds. Inquire about barter.Because of the way the class is designed, you may attend just the dates for which you are available--missing classes is not a problem as I provide a write up of each class so that one may stay current by participating virtually.Payment for the full session at the start of class is expected and preferred. To reserve a space, please contact me by email. hn2626@nospamheregmail.com
