Reading and Writing through the collected poems of Robert Creeley, 1945-1975 for Virtual and in-Toronto Participants

Meeting time: 4 PM to 6 PM

We will be studying Robert Creeley’s Collected poems (1945 – 1975); this book of poems will generate talk and strategies for the writing we enact in class. We will spend the first hour listening to the poems aloud and the second hour writing. The writing portion will take the form of starting points & prompts drawn from the poems as well as those of my own design. Our writing sessions will be formalized into poems—participants will gather works into mini-manuscripts for review and commentary in the final class.Required Text:The Collected Poems of Robert Creeley, 1945–1975, University of California PressRecommended Texts:The Collected Poems of Robert Creeley, 1975–2005, University of California PressStudents are responsible for purchasing required text and for bringing it, a writing notebook and pen to class.About the WorkshopI have been leading this poetry workshop for 13 years. The focus for the workshop is transmission and absorption and doing. We spend half the class reading the selected text aloud and the second half writing. Previous workshops have engaged the works of Dickinson, Stein, Niedecker, Kyger, Berrigan and Whalen as well as Olson’s Maximus. An essay on the class is included in the anthology "Poets on Teaching" (University of Iowa, 2010). The workshop takes place in my home in Toronto near Chester Station. Donations accepted

Because of the way the class is designed, you may attend just the dates for which you are available--missing classes is not a problem as I provide a write up of each class so that one may stay current by participating virtually.
