Virtual students will benefit from a one-on-one manuscript review scheduled via phone or Skype. In-Toronto participants will have access to in-class critique during our final meeting.Required Text:*As Ever* by Joanne Kyger, Penguin BooksStudents are responsible for purchasing required text and for have it, a writing notebook and pen for class.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: have been leading this popular poetry workshop for more than 13 years. The focus for the workshop is transmission, absorption and writing production. Participants typically leave the workshop with a sheaf of poems and a deeper understanding of a single poet's body of work. The first hour is spent speaking and listening to her poems aloud and the second hour will be engaged in writing. The writing portion will take the form of starting points & prompts drawn from the poems as well as other prompts that I introduce. The environment is serious but casual. A focus on small press poetry lineage, past and present, is emphasized.Previous workshops have engaged the works of Dickinson, Stein, Niedecker, Berrigan, and Whalen as well as Olson’s Maximus. An essay on the class is included in the anthology "Poets on Teaching" (University of Iowa, 2010). The workshop takes place in my home in the Danforth and virtually.Because of the way the class is designed, you may attend just the dates for which you are available--missing classes is not a problem as I provide a write up of each class so that one may stay current by participating virtually.Virtual students receive this weekly write-up via email and follow the reading and writing prompts at their convenience. To reserve a space, please contact me. Questions welcome...Yours,Hoa
